Lake Tumichucua is one of Riberalta municipality’s seven tourist wonders, located at the North of the
Beni department, on the Madre de Dios River banks, near the Brazilian border.
This body of water, which in the Tacana indigenous language means “Matacus Island”, has 3.4 square
kilometers, not counting the inner island that covers 0.66 square kilometers. The latter is shaped like a
drop of water and, according to local belief, “it moves at night.”
The community offers various water entertainment options, such as canoeing, slides, jet skis, or simply
enjoying swimming. In addition, visitors can take canoe rides on the north end of the lake and in the
middle of the low forest, where there can be found cocoa plants and motacu palm trees. The tour takes
you to the Peking Lake shores, where alligators and anacondas live, and where visitors can experience a
close encounter with local wildlife.
The area is also perfect for hiking and observing the local plant diversity, including the gigantic mapajo
trees with enormous crowns.
As for gastronomy, Amazonian dishes can be enjoyed such as pacu head soup, pacu sudado with
parboiled banana masaco, deep fried paiche, chicken stew and fried pacu, among others.
