Motacusito Cavern: the Bolivian Pantanal underground world

Discover the Motacusito natural beauty, a community located eight kilometers southwest of the municipality of Puerto Suarez, Santa Cruz department, in western Bolivia. This community is the guardian of the impressive “Motacusito Caverns”.

Motacusito is located in the Otuquis National Park area of influence and thanks to a community tourism project, families are organized to show their hidden treasures in the Bolivian Pantanal and thus support the protected area’s safeguard.

On the tours you will be able to see stalactites, stalagmites, and fauna, as well as a stream that drains from the interior of the cave.

To make the journey, there is a tour that with the following tourist attractions:

  • Caverns: located 3.4 km from the community, they are an impressive 120-meter-long place.
  • Lajas: Just 600 meters from the caverns, there is a rocky place, which offers local flora observation, such as cacti, bromeliads and trenches used by soldiers for training.
  • El Muro spring: a natural body of water found in the area. It is a perfect place for adventure lovers since one can practice climbing and hiking.

Best time to visit:

• All year, except in the rainy season, from December to March. Coordinate the visit with the community.

Way to get there:

  • Direct buses to Puerto Suarez depart from the bimodal terminal of Santa Cruz de La Sierra city. The price is from Bs 90 onwards, depending on the season ($us 13).
  • From that point a taxi or motorcycle taxi can be taken to the Motacusito community.
  • Taxi points are available in the Puerto Suarez municipal market in order to arrive directly to the community. The price is Bs 20 ($us 3).
  • From Puerto Quijarro or the border with Brazil, the trufi – shared taxi association charges Bs 5 to the Puerto Suarez municipality of ($us 0.80).

  • A change of clothes and extra shoes because there is water inside the caverns
